CHALLENGE
Catholic Medical Center (CMC) is a 330-bed not-for-profit full-service acute care hospital, with more than 26 subspecialties, inpatient and outpatient services, diagnostic imaging, and a 30-bed 24-hour emergency department. The hospital’s data needs are large and critical, demanding extreme reliability and redundancy.
ITS SOLUTIONS
- ITS manages and supports CMC’s AIX/System I enterprise and mid-range systems, which has 19 different LPARs across two hosts in separate data centers to serve the hospital’s many functions and departments, from Registration to Payroll, Laboratory to Radiology.
- If CMC’s storage area network (SAN) goes down, everything comes to a standstill, so it requires five 9s or better reliability, and redundancy via Spectrum Virtualize, IBM’s industry leading Storage Virutalization engine. Fortunately for CMC, ITS has on its team what Tom Fairfield calls an “uber-SAN expert.”
- The back-up environment is also critical for CMC, given the extravagant demands for retention and confidentiality of medical data. ITS’s team managing CMC’s Spectrum Protect, aka Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM), environment is led by “one of the best guys in the country,” Fairfield notes.
