Is Your IT Infrastructure Scalable?
July 21, 2014
There is much to do and remember when launching a startup. While you are likely dreaming of and anticipating future growth and success, it’s easy to forget about scalability. Don’t make that foolish mistake! If you are serious about your company, every area of your business should have built in scalability features.
Scalability Tips for Startups
While every business is different, deep down at a microscopic level, everything is quite similar. That’s why you should lean in and soak up as much information as you can from business experts everywhere. Here are a few of their tips for making your startup scalable:
- Start Right. The most important part of building a scalable startup is beginning with a scalable idea. You need an idea that can grow beyond your initial thinking. If you want to attract investors (outside of your group of friends and local community), you need a billion dollar opportunity with double digit growth rates. Investors like large numbers, and their financial backing will give you all the resources you need to be scalable.
- Learn to Outsource. Scaling requires the ability to know when to keep something in-house and when to outsource it. You won’t have all the resources you need to complete every core activity, but you can get everything done if you learn how to balance what you’ve got.
- Don’t Settle. Too many startups fail because they get comfortable with where they are. From a human capital point of view, you need to continually recruit talent. As your business scales up, you’ll need more and better employees.
- Scalable Technology. Regardless of the industry your startup is in, you need scalable technology that can move with you every step of the way. Whether it’s a data center or research software, never invest in technology unless it’s scalable. Far too many startups find themselves in sticky situations because they didn’t think ahead when purchasing an expensive software or IT system.
IT Consolidation
As your startup grows, you will need a flexible data center that allows your business to move forward, as opposed to holding it back. At ITS, we drive a more efficient data center with IT consolidation. Benefits include a reduced IT footprint, increased system performance, incredible scalability, and simplification of systems management. Contact us today for more information!
